Spotlight Sunday - Thaddaeus Bourne

This week's Spotlight Sunday features Thaddaeus Bourne! Thaddaeus joined us last season as Reverend Hale in The Crucible. Here is what he is up to this season.

This fall, baritone Thaddaeus Bourne performs as Belcore in L’elisir d’amore (Project Opera), El Dancaïro in Carmen (Long Island Opera), and Charlie in Jake Heggie’s Three Decembers (Opera MODO). In the 2015-16 season he performed as the baritone soloist in the Yellow River Cantata (The Confucius Institute), as a guest artist with the Misericordia Classical Series, Reverend Hale in The Crucible (Hartford Opera Theater), Dr. Falke in Die Fledermaus (Martina Arroyo Foundation), and created the role of the Angel in William David Cooper’s Hagar (National Opera Convention). Recent Perfor-mances include Happy in La fanciulla del West (Indianapolis Opera), Sharpless in Madame Butterfly and Perizonio in L’impresario in angustie (Montefeltro Festival), Il conte Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro and the title role of Don Giovanni (New York Lyric Opera), The Father in Hänsel und Gretel (Connecticut Lyric Opera) and Major-General Stanley in The Pirates of Penzance (Simsbury Light Opera).

In keeping with our theme this season we asked Thaddaeus what the idea of "opera without borders" means to him.

-- Opera without borders can go in so many directions and I think Hartford Opera Theater has always done a great job of exploring that. Whether it's taking opera out of the concert halls and into new venues, adding digital media, exploring new works or new interpretations of old works, etc. Hartford Opera Theater is always willing to explore new creative horizons and rethink old ideas to make opera relevant to a larger audience. Should opera be entertaining or should it make a serious statement? It can do either or both. Hartford Opera Theater is committed to this kind of work and that is important because it helps opera remain a vibrant living art form.
