Spotlight Sunday Feature - Shuying Li and the Four Corners Ensemble
Happy Spotlight Sunday everyone! Today, we are pleased to feature composer Shuying Li and the Four Corners Ensemble! Shuying is the composer of Who Married Star Husbands which will be performed at our New in November Festival next Saturday in downtown Hartford. About Composer Shuying Li
Praised as “a real talent here waiting to emerge” (Seattle Times) and with her “skillful orchestral writing, very colorful language and huge waves of sound,” Shuying Li is an award-winning composer who began her musical education in her native China. In her sophomore year at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, she won a scholarship to continue undergraduate study at the Hartt School in Connecticut. She holds a master’s degree from the University of Michigan, where she is now pursuing a doctorate degree.
Most recently, Shuying has been commissioned by the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra to write a new piece for a Carneige Hall premiere in December 2017. In addition, Shuying has been named one of the three resident composers in the Composer Librettist Development Program with the American Lyric Theater in their 2017-2018 season, to produce a one-act opera in May 2018.
Other recognition includes the ASCAP/CBDNA Ferederick Fennell Prize, The American Prize, awards
from the the Michigan Music Teachers Association Commissioned Composer Competition, the NAfME Composers Competition, the Melta International Composition Competition, the Florence String Quartet Call for Scores, the Foundation for Modern Music’s International Robert Avalon Composition Competition, the MacDowell Club of Milwaukee Young Composer Competition, and the International J. Dorfman Composition Competition, among others. She was the “Composer in Residence” for the Romania ICon Arts Festival during summer 2014.
Shuying’s compositions have been performed by Seattle Symphony Orchestra, New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, Wellesley Conference Chamber Orchestra, Orkest de ereprijs (Netherlands), Norfolk Contemporary Ensemble, Avanti! Chamber Orchestra (Finland), ICon Arts Ensemble (Romania), Cecilia Quartet (Canada), Opera From Scratch (Canada), Donald Sinta Quartet, 15.19. About the Four Corners Ensemble:
Founded in 2017, the Four Corners Ensemble (4CE) consists of 6 top-level emerging musicians originating from 5 Countries (Australia, China, UK, South Korea & USA) on 4 Continents (Asia, Australia, Europe & America) and trained by 3 world-class musical institutes (Juilliard, New England Conservatory, & University of Michigan); 4CE will have a residency base in 2 cities: Ann Arbor and New York; with 1 founding principle that music is a rare and precious thing: an international birthright we can all claim, and that to make the music of the future, the music makers must have a truly global, diverse heritage. Together, 4CE endeavors to both advocate and represent within its members the beauty of diversity across musical styles, regions, cultures, and racial identities, as well as to promote common values, inclusiveness, and harmony through its musical performances and community and education work. As a new founding ensemble, 4CE has already secured many performance opportunities as well as established international collaborations with other professional associations. These opportunities include: performance in the New In November 8 Festival that hosted by the Hartford Opera Theater, residency in both the Opus 1 International Music Festival, and in the Nova International Youth Orchestra Academy in China in August, 2018.
