Spotlight Sunday - David Wolfson

We are less than one week away from the world premiere of The Faith Operas and we thought what better time to find out what David Wolfson thinks of opera without borders. David Wolfson is currently working towards his PhD in composition at Rutgers University, and has taught at Rutgers University, Montclair State University and Hunter College. He is enjoying an eclectic career, having composed opera, musical theatre, touring children’s musicals, and incidental music for plays; choral music, band music, orchestral music, chamber music, art songs, and music for solo piano; comedy songs, cabaret songs and one memorable score for an amusement park big-headed-costumed-character show. Current projects include two musicals and a chamber opera. Upcoming engagements:

Play Like a Winner (with Erik Johnke, book and lyrics) will be produced this summer as part of the New York Musical Festival in July, exact dates TBA.

The Central Michigan Unitarian Fellowship Choir will be premiering the choral cycle, The Seven Principles on a service on May 7th.

Tom Piercy and David are premiering my piece A Single Step for bass clarinet and piano at Bargemusic in Brooklyn on September 22nd.

Here’s a first thought about “Opera Without Borders”: many people perceive opera as having a wall of elitism around it. Hartford Opera Theatre is a terrific example of why this isn’t necessarily true: they’re a bunch of regular folks who happen to have amazing voices. I love telling stories with these people. Pull up a chair and listen. The stories are about you, after all.
