It's Spotlight Sunday time! Today, we are featuring baritone, Michael McAvoy. He will be playing Top in The Tender Land -- June 2 & 4 at the Aetna Theatre at the Wadsworth Atheneum. To purchase tickets click here

Baritone Michael McAvoy is a Connecticut native and graduate of UCONN, where he earned his Vocal Performance degree studying under Dr. Constance Rock.  He won first place in Opera Theatre of Connecticut’s Amici Vocal Competition and later played Curio in their production of Julius Caesar in Egypt.

Michael has since performed with various opera companies, most notably Bronx Opera, Light Opera of NY, Vocal Productions NYC, Hartford Opera Theater and Opera Naples, where he participated in their Young Artist Program.  Michael has also performed as a soloist in oratorio and concert productions for groups such as Connecticut Concert Opera, The Norwalk Symphony Orchestra, The Naples Philharmonic Chorale and the Falmouth Chorale.  With his agile and smooth lyric baritone voice, he most enjoys singing the role of Figaro in Il Barbiere di Siviglia. His other notable roles include Belcore from L’elisir d’amore, Ben from The Telephone and Papageno from Die Zauberflöte.

Here is what Michael had to say about opera without borders:

To me the phrase “Opera Without Boarders” means taking operatic works, particularly new and fresh, nontraditional or even older and more obscure ones, and bringing them to various communities. The objective being to present opera as a progressive and organic art form in an inclusive environment, versus an exercise in grandeur and spectacle to be enjoyed only by the elite.
